Our team is made up of two registered dietitians and two registered nurses who are ALL nationally certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists. We have served the greater Austin area with diabetes education services together and individually for many years!
Katie (wick-NICK-ee) has been a nurse in a variety of fields since 2006. Throughout her nursing journey, she often felt like she was “putting a band-aid” on much bigger issues. Her passion for primary and secondary prevention, combined with a personal history of insulin resistance and family history of diabetes, ultimately led her to her dream career of diabetes care and education specialist. She loves helping people, from the newly diagnosed to diabetes-pros, meet their own health goals. Katie recently obtained her certification as a Lifestyle Coach to help people prevent Type 2 diabetes.
Outside of work, Katie spends time with her family, including 2 little girls who keep her very busy! She loves to be outdoors - gardening, walking and playing pickleball.
Joanne is a Registered Nurse with over 30 years of experience in managing the care of adults with acute and chronic healthcare issues. After many years of hospital bedside nursing and case management she followed her passion for diabetes and specialized in providing diabetes care and education to adults in the community. Joanne believes that everyone has the right to understand and manage their diabetes in a way that allows them to reach their personal health goals and enjoy life on their terms. Joanne is Board Certified in Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM)!
Outside of work Joanne has a busy home with two active daughters, 2 dogs, 2 cats and an axolotl. She loves growing flowers and vegetables and visiting local gardens to dream about all the possibilities! Her future plans include more travel, more golf, and more 5ks.
Beverly is a clinical dietitian with over 25 years of experience in diabetes education in Texas. If it is related to diabetes, chances are... she has done it! She is a certified pump trainer, has worked in inpatient and outpatient settings, has assisted maternal fetal medicine, internal medicine and endocrinology clinics, has mentored residents and medical students during their endocrinology rotations, and more. She is a whiz with diabetes insulin delivery devices and continuous glucose monitors. She loves to learn and never shies away from a challenge.
She also speaks Spanish!
In her spare time, Beverly enjoys cooking, sewing, quilting, puzzle-ing, and crafting.
Laura Smith has been working as a dietitian in the Austin area for over 20 years. She started her career as a hospital dietitian, but eventually realized that working one on one with people to achieve their health and nutrition goals is where she belonged. After helping people with diabetes in the outpatient setting for a number of years, she became certified as a diabetes care and education specialist to ensure she was providing the best care possible. Laura’s philosophy is to meet people wherever they are on their health journey. She believes that no two people are alike, so she partners with each person to create an individual nutrition plan that works for them and their unique lifestyle and goals.
When she isn’t working, Laura spends as much time as possible outside, running or hiking local trails. She is a music lover, so enjoys catching live music shows whenever she has the chance. You can also find her happily reading research or news related to nutrition and diabetes, not only because she is a dietitian, but because “it’s fun!”
